View from the top: A charity abseil down Jurys Inn

We’ve been working with Derby Hospitals Charity for a while now and we have regular meetings at their office at the Royal Derby. Today was a little different as we took a trip to the Jurys Inn to see Vicky from the Charity team abseil down the side of the building, along with about 40 other people all of whom are braver than me.

Visiting Hello Hubmarine at the Derby Book Festival

On Saturday evening, we went to see Hello Hubmarine’s Derby Book Festival event at the Silk Mill (we seem to be there all the time of late). Writing and design goes hand-in-hand and most of our work involves copy writing rather than fiction but we were keen to see what our local (and not so local) writers are up to.

Derby Silk Mill, Museum of Making

Yesterday evening we were given a tour of Derby Silk Mill by Daniel Martin, Curator of Making. We’ve been to the Silk Mill many times before but being shown the building and its contents by someone like Daniel really opened my eyes to what we have here.

Sugata Mitra: The child-driven education

Last Friday evening we went to the first of a series of science talks at the University of Derby. The talk was about challenging the current education system by 2013 TED prize winner, Professor Sugata Mitra. His approach to changing the current educational system will be seen by some as radical, but we are open to it and hope it will improve creativity in learning.

Games@Derby – Game design from Derby University

On Friday we left work a little early to go down to Games@Derby, a showcase of games from the Derby University 3rd year game design students. The Silk Mill hosted the event and when we got there it was packed with people eager to see and play the games.
